No one said a word as they climbed into the forest green Bentley, sunshine glinting off its perfectly polished wheels. Max got in the driver's seat and it wasn't until they left the police station behind them that his serious façade finally dropped.

"Were any of you mistreated?" he asked.

Everyone shook their heads. The adrenalin of their escape was finally wearing off. Dr. Higgins, more than the others, recognized the drop of adrenalin, but he had been expecting this. Even so, he found himself suddenly, exhaustingly tired. And yet, he was curious about the stranger. He had the air of nobility, and he had marched in like Napoleon himself, although the man behind the wheel of the Bentley stood at least an inch or two over six feet.

"Jonas, aren't you going to introduce us?" Higgins asked.

"Right, sorry. Neil Patel, Alan Higgins, this is my good friend, Maximilian Frazier."

"I hope you don't mind, but I'll shake your hands once we get a chance to stop. I'd like to put as much distance between us and your friends as possible."

It took moments for Higgins to realize what their benefactor was actually saying.

"We're being followed," Higgins guessed.

Frazier nodded. "Two cars. They're trying very hard to avoid being seen. One of the beauties of Vienna is the presence of so many one-way streets. But don't worry. There's a checkpoint up ahead, and I have way more horses under my hood than they do in their puny vehicles."

Sure enough, after a cursory examination, and after not one but two solicitations for autographs from the checkpoint guards, the Bentley was allowed through, and Maximilian Frazier gunned the engine, quickly putting anyone intent on the chase eating dust.

Once five minutes had gone by and everyone had relaxed, curiosity got the better of Higgins and he asked, "Jonas, the suspense is killing me. Would you please explain who this kind gentleman is and how we might repay him for his kindness? Oh, and an explanation of his celebrity would be appreciated as well."

Both Frazier and Jonas chuckled. "Would you like to do the honors?" Jonas asked his friend.

The driver shook his head. "Oh, no. I want to hear how you describe our first encounter."

They both laughed at the memory, and then Jonas began.

"If you hadn't guessed, Max is an old friend. Before he became a celebrity in his native Austria, he was just a lowly prince trying to find his way in the world. Of course, I had no idea about his background when we met. I had taken a semester off school to 'find myself' and thought it would be a good idea to backpack through Europe. Off I went with a few hundred dollars in my pocket. I made it through London all right and to Vienna. No, not to Vienna. To Rome. And don't you know, the first coffee shop I went into to get an espresso, all my money was taken. I didn't have a lira left, but luckily Max here saw the whole thing.
